February 13, 2004 - Putangirua Pinnacles

Left the B&B early and drove around, doubling back a bit, into vineyard country. Out here, about an hour south, on the shore, are the Putangirua Pinnacles, which were used as the Dimholt Road in Return of the King. We spent about three hours hiking up into there and back. Upon return we bought dinner stuffs and wrapped up early.

Friday the 13th at the Paths of the Dead. Brave or foolish, not sure. The Pinnacles are really amazing, and were great to photograph in the nice weather. Maybe in a couple days I'll find a place I'd trust with developing photos again. The walk was along a riverbed the whole way that we took, so it was a bit slow going for the relative distance. I went about as far in as you can go, climbing some boulders pretty much to the source of the stream. I couldn't see if it was coming out of the cliffside, or down it but under boulders. As the walls were still very high, now on three sides, not wide enough for me to put my arms out all the way, and made of something like clay-packed rocks, I didn't try and harder to find out, and left.

Had a bottle of Martinborough Vineyard Pinor Noir over dinner, which was pretty good. Also, we've tried to locate a golden kiwi (fruit) to eat, on Eric's suggestion that they're here and not exported, but apparently we're in the wrong season.
