February 16, 2004 - Mount Ruapehu

Upon leaving Napier, we found that the storm we had overnight resulted in the closing of many roads around the island, though the way to Lake Taupo was open. We got to Tongariro National Park in heavy clouds. We're in the lower slopes of Mount Ruapehu (Mordor and other desolate places from the films). We went and saw some falls, and tried to drive up the mountain to see more specific LOTR sights. The cloud cover, though, was dense fog that would've prevented us from seeing anything unless it was within 15 feet of us really, so we gave up and came back. Will try again tomorrow.

The weather forecast is grim, so we may not get to see much here at all, which would be almost as disappointing as the temperatures here. Ah well, we'll see what happens. Saw our first kiwi crossing sign today as well. About all we've seen of Mt. Ruapehu is what we've driven, though it should be towering right above us. I hope we get to see something before we go in two days. After consuming a bottle of wine between us (Montana Merlot from Marlborough), we (after 3 trees) have successfully watched the water swirl clockwise down a drain, via a sink in the bathroom. Also, I have found yet another dining establishment, in a fancy hotel this time, that doesn't know what a martini is (nor an Old Fashioned, which is what I asked for first). I eventually just ordered whiskey on ice, and got scotch.
